We are delighted to announce our Edinburgh Schools’ Film Development Programme.

Enhancing film literacy, knowledge, understanding and production skills of teachers and young people throughout the City, through Professional Learning sessions for teachers utilising SEE’s curriculum that supports the learning of young people at various stages, direct classroom support enhancing the knowledge and skills of teachers and pupils, and free access to camera, sound, lighting and editing facilities.

Our approach will be to target secondary schools in the first instance with particular attempts to work with schools whose pupils live in areas high on the SIMD index. Our priorities align with that of the Children and Families Department and we will be contacting schools in these areas, especially those who currently have no Media Studies activity, to look at how we can help them to use filmmaking either in class or as an extracurricular activity as a way of building confidence and raising the attainment of some of the lowest achieving pupils and those in need.

Those schools who do offer media studies will be asked what support they require be that one-to-one Professional Learning sessions for teachers and/or support in the classroom with the aim of building up teacher skills and confidence and supporting pupils in producing excellent work. We will also open up our equipment for use by all schools in their filmmaking work, free of charge (see our full equipment list here).

Creative Manager, Graham Fitzpatrick, said this;

“Our belief is that with the right support schools will see their students’ creativity skills being nurtured and developed through the real and relevant context of film making, raising confidence and attainment as well as improving life chances and providing positive pathways to employment and further study.”

The Edinburgh Schools’ Film Development Programme will be coordinated by our Senior Film Tutor and Engagement Officer Neil Rolland and all inquires should be addressed to neil@screen-ed.org.
